The most dreaded question out there, “What’s your budget?”
On one hand clients feel that giving up this information will open them up to exploitation by shady contractors looking to maximize every nickel.
On the other hand, contractors feel this is invasive, akin to asking someone how much they make.
But for the sake of a better project experience let’s get over our fears and explore this topic from the beginning.
As I mentioned in our “Estimate, Guestimate, Budget, or ROM” blog post we can build a $150,000 kitchen or a $400,000 kitchen all in the same space
And unless you have ALL your details figured out one contractor might assume you’re looking for the $150,000 project and the other may think you want the $400,000, guessing what your budget is and trying to develop a proposal around that isn’t beneficial to anybody.
So let’s do everybody a favor and broach the budget subject early. Even if your budget is flexible when we have that conversation early on we can develop a project that maximizes that budget.
Don’t shy away from the contractor who asks the Budget Question early on, rather find a contractor that is trustworthy, who understands the importance on knowing your budget from the beginning, and who will use that budget to provide the best project possible within those parameters
